"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free" Galatians 5:1

Today we celebrate the 4th of July which signifies our independence and freedom from England. It is a great privilege to be an American and live in a nation that is still free although this nation is under continuous spiritual attack to remove its freedoms. The original 13 colonies were set free from Great Britain's power and control which led to their independence (freedom). Living in freedom is a great thing which is why we celebrate the 4th of July Holiday or Independence Day.

But today, I want to take a look at it from a spiritual perspective and I want to ask you this question. How many people are still under the power and control of something in their life and are not free? There are so many people who are not free from drugs/alcohol, pornography, mental and emotional bondages, and sicknesses. We are created to live free as God's ways are freedom. Because we are called to live in freedom our true enemy (Satan) wants to keep us from that freedom.

At the cross Jesus paid the price to bring freedom to people.

Colossians 2:13-15 "when you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven all your trespasses, by cancelling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them through the cross"

The cross is how Jesus brought Freedom to us. At the cross we have Freedom from:

1. Sin. The Devil has a record of your sins (debt owed) but Jesus forgave all your sins and you are free from this debt. We are declared free from past sins and the judgment for them that was due to us. Many people have not forgiven others who have sinned against them and they are suffering in unforgiveness, hatred, and bitterness. There are also those who are bound in guilt because they have not forgiven themselves for what they have done in the past. We are forgiven of sin but are commanded to forgive others (including ourselves) of sin which brings freedom.

2. Curses. A curse is spiritual and not natural and this spiritual power is being released (enforced by demons) which holds people in bondage. Many people cannot break free from addictions and sinful patterns because a curse is in operation. If you cannot break free from alcoholism or drugs or any addiction for that matter; many times it is because of a generational curse. When their is unrepentant sin in a generation it will transfer to the next generation through iniquity.(Exodus 20:5) Iniquity means a magnet or a bent towards a certain type of sin. Common curses are addictions, sexual sins, emotional and mental bondages, poverty, premature death, and inability to conceive children. Demonic spirits are the enforcers of these curses. If the curse is not broken; people are held in bondage to these issues and cannot find freedom from them.

At the cross all curses were put upon Jesus and they are legally broken (Galatians 3:13) but freedom from these curses still needs to be appropriated by faith. Example; Jesus died on the cross so all people can be saved but until they appropriate it by faith they do not access what was done at the cross. The point is it does not just happen automatically. When I went through deliverance from generational alcoholism in 2009 a demon spoke through me in a very deep voice, "NO, we have been here so long!!!" as it left my body. The demons had enforced the curse of alcoholism a very long time in my generational line. I was alcoholic, my father was alcoholic, and my grandfather was alcoholic. I have prayed for many people since 2009 who were set free from a generational curses of addiction and until they went through deliverance they could not get true freedom from addiction.

3. Demons. There are countless people, Christian and non-Christian, that are under the power of demonic spirits that are keeping them in bondage. The ministry of deliverance is one of Jesus' main ministries and he still delivers people from demons. Jesus came to set the captives free and it wasn't him going to set people free from jails/prisons but it was setting people free from spiritual captivity. People need deliverance from addictions, mental and emotional bondages, and sicknesses. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever meaning He still is the savior, the healer, the deliverer, the baptizer in the Holy Spirit, etc (Hebrews 13:8). I went through a powerful deliverance from pornography in 2009 and many demons left my body in a dramatic fashion. There are many people who are seeking freedom through the world's methods but if the root of your problem is demonic, only Jesus can set you free from it. Jesus can set you free from addictions, depression, pornography, suicidal thoughts, anger, fear, anxiety, rejection, abandonment, and anything else that is keeping you in bondage. Jesus came to bring freedom to people who are not free and are held captive by demons (Luke 4:18).
